About the flag
Adopted in 1848, it added a red stripe to the older blue and white Central American design, reportedly inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution.
How to spot it: Five stripes: blue, white, a double-width red centre, white, blue; Thailand swaps it round with red outer stripes and a blue centre.
