About the flag
Called Hinomaru, circle of the sun, it echoes Japan’s own name, Nihon or Nippon, meaning origin of the sun. Despite its long history, it only became the legal national flag in 1999.
How to spot it: White with a single centred red disc; Bangladesh’s disc sits on green and Palau’s is yellow on blue.
